Brad’s Search : Part 41

I suddenly jolt awake. It’s still dark. I look to my left – James is sitting up in bed.

I rest my hand on his upper thigh. “What’s wrong?”

“I just had a bad dream.”

“What happened?”

“Mom, Dad, Paul, and I were sitting in the living room at our old house. Paul just kept yelling at me. Brad, he just kept yelling and yelling and yelling.”

“Yelling what?”

“Stuff like, ‘Fags like you will burn in hell.’”

I sit up. “He actually said stuff like that to you in real life?”

He can barely muster a “Yeah.”

I then realize how lucky I really am to have had a family like mine.

“Are you still worried about that conversation tomorrow?”

He snorts. “You think?”

I rub his thigh. “I honestly don’t think it’s going to be as bad as you think. It sounds to me like Paul genuinely wants to make things right.”

He takes a deep breath. “I hope so.”

I lean in and kiss him. “Come on, we have a few hours left until we need to be up. Let’s go back to sleep.”

We both lie down, and he turns his back to me. I wrap my arms around him and fall back asleep.
